J.D. Martinez Injury: Updates on Tigers OF’s Elbow and Return

Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez suffered a non-displaced fracture to his right elbow in June and is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday, per Katie Strang of ESPN.com.

Continue for updates.

Martinez to Start at Designated Hitter

Monday, July 25

Strang noted the outfielder will play for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens during his rehab and ease his way back into the outfield by beginning as the designated hitter.

When healthy, Martinez has remained a rock-solid power bat who has helped ignite the team’s offense. To date, Martinez has batted .286 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI while recording an on-base percentage of .358 in 65 games this season.

Those numbers have come on the heels of Martinez’s career year. Over the course of a healthy 2015 campaign that saw him appear in 158 games, the six-year veteran tallied 38 home runs and 102 RBI en route to earning a Silver Slugger Award.

Should the power-packed Martinez suffer any type of setback, the Tigers will likely turn to Mike Aviles or Tyler Collins to fill the void.

Matt Holliday Injury: Updates on Cardinals Star’s Face and Return

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday suffered a facial abrasion in his nose and upper lip area after being hit by a pitch in Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres. However, he has been cleared to return.

Holliday Active vs. Dodgers

Friday, July 22

The Cardinals announced Holliday will play against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

Injuries Continue to Surface for Holliday

Holliday battled lower-back tightness right after the season started in April, but he’s otherwise been healthy following a 2015 campaign that was littered with injuries.

A year ago, Holliday was limited to just 73 appearances as he battled a right quadriceps injury that hindered his availability throughout the summer. He finished the abbreviated campaign with a .279 batting average, four home runs and 35 RBI.

Prior to the injury, Holliday was batting .244 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI. He’s also posted an on-base percentage of .319.

Yasiel Puig Injury: Updates on Dodgers Star’s Hamstring and Return

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig suffered a hamstring injury on Thursday against the Washington Nationals

Continue for updates.

Puig Out vs. Cardinals

Friday, July 22

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Puig won’t play Friday against St. Louis but will be available off the bench in an emergency.

Latest on Puig’s Recovery Timeline

Friday, July 22

Alanna Rizzo of SportsNet LA reported that Puig is likely to start on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Injury-Plagued Puig Struggles for Consistency

Puig has battled minor bumps and bruises all season, including a left shoulder issue, a minor knee contusion and nagging hamstring discomfort that has again reared its ugly head.

Puig has posted a disappointing .257 average and .698 OPS a year after struggling with a .255 average, 11 home runs and 38 RBI during an injury-riddled 2015 campaign.

Should Puig miss more time a season after appearing in just 79 games, the Dodgers have plenty of capable bodies to turn to as replacements. He’s been unable to recapture his All-Star form from 2014 for the last two years, so it might be better for the Dodgers to get a new hitter in the lineup.

For the time being, Scott Van Slyke should garner the most consideration to fill Puig’s vacant right field post as manager Dave Roberts contemplates ways to tinker with his lineup in the days ahead.

MLB Reportedly ‘Looking Into’ David Ortiz’s Comments for Tampering

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz may be headed for retirement after the 2016 season, but his thoughts about the future of the team’s roster could land him in hot water with MLB

On Friday, ESPN.com’s Scott Lauber reported MLB is “looking into” whether Ortiz violated the league’s tampering policy when he made comments regarding Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez and Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion during the All-Star break.

“The Red Sox know, also, that they need to bring force into the middle of the lineup,” Ortiz said, per Thomas Kane of Boston.com. “And, sorry Blue Jays, but who better to do that than Encarnacion?”

Ortiz had this to say about Fernandez, according to the Boston Herald‘s Evan Drellich: “He has incredible stuff. I thought he was going to end up playing with me this year. I mean, you never know. I want him in my starting rotation. I mean, we need a little bit of help and hopefully that happens at some point, who knows?”

“There aren’t any indications that MLB will take disciplinary action in the form of a fine or suspension, but it’s possible Ortiz could receive a warning letter from the league office,” Lauber reported.

Ortiz brushed off the suggestion Friday.

“Tampering? I don’t write no paycheck,” he said, per Lauber. “I can say whatever I want. I’m not a GM or a team owner or whatever. I mean, if I say tomorrow that I want to play with LeBron James, is that tampering, too?”

Boston may not be able to nab Fernandez before the Aug. 1 trade deadline, but the team has been active on the trade market over the last week.

After acquiring closer Brad Ziegler on Saturday in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Red Sox flipped prized pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza to the San Diego Padres in exchange for All-Star southpaw Drew Pomeranz on Thursday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune‘s Dennis Lin

When it comes to finding Ortiz’s replacement, it is worth noting Encarnacion will become an unrestricted free agent when his contract expires following the 2016 season.

Tyler Flowers Injury: Updates on Braves Catcher’s Hand and Return

Atlanta Braves catcher Tyler Flowers suffered a broken hand on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox, and he’s slated to miss a big chunk of time after the All-Star break.

Continue for updates.

Flowers Out 4-6 Weeks

Tuesday, July 12

Citing sources, Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball relayed the update.

Flowers was enjoying a decent first half prior to the injury. In 53 games, the 30-year-old batted .253 with a .343 on-base percentage and what would equate to a career-best .425 slugging percentage.

All told, Flowers belted seven home runs and drove in 21 runs over the course of 198 plate appearances.

Now that the Braves’ backstop is sidelined for a month at a minimum, veteran A.J. Pierzynski figures to shoulder an even heavier load moving forward.

In 56 games thus far, the 39-year-old Pierzynski is batting just .205 with a .227 on-base percentage, .250 slugging percentage, zero home runs and 18 RBI.

Pierzynski can provide stability calling games from behind the plate, but he’s not a threat to take opposing pitchers yard the same way Flowers is.

MLB All-Star Game 2016: AL, NL Rosters and Final Predictions

The 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is nearly here, and the star-studded festivities shouldn’t disappoint when things get underway Tuesday night from Petco Park in San Diego.

But before the first pitch flies at 8 p.m. ET on Fox, it’s worth taking some time to acquaint yourself with this year’s rosters and starting lineups, which you can view below courtesy of ESPN Stats & Info on Twitter:

So as time ticks down in advance of the Midsummer Classic, here’s a rundown of who to keep an eye on when it comes to the National League and American League sides.

National League Roster

It’s hard to discuss this year’s NL roster and not marvel at the proliferation of Chicago Cubs players in the starting lineup.

Most notably, the Cubs are fielding the entire starting infield, with first baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Ben Zobrist, third baseman Kris Bryant and shortstop Addison Russell hoping to bring some Wrigley Field magic to Petco Park.

Russell in particular will be looking to make good on his nod since it’s snapping a decades-long drought, per ESPN Stats & Info:

In terms of historical significance, All-Star feats don’t get much more rare than what the Cubs have accomplished. According to ESPN.com, Chicago is just the second team in history to send its four starting infielders to the Midsummer Classic as starters. The only other club to boast such status was the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.

“It’s an honor, and to have a lot of my teammates there with me will make it even more fun,” Bryant said, per ESPN.com. “Just having your teammates and friends there will make it more special. The nerves probably won’t be there as much as last year. You just look around and it’s a normal game.”

Dexter Fowler would have given Chicago a hefty share of the starting positions on the NL side, but a hamstring injury has sidelined him for the midseason spectacular. And with Yoenis Cespedes (quad) of the New York Mets also out, the Miami Marlins’ Marcell Ozuna and the Colorado Rockies’ Carlos Gonzalez will occupy starting positions in the outfield Tuesday evening, according to an official press release from MLB

The Washington Nationals’ Daniel Murphy and Wilson Ramos have been scorching-hot at the plate throughout the first half of the season, and their combined pop off the bench could help the NL solve a wicked AL pitching staff led by starter Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox.

American League Roster

Like the Cubs in the NL, the Boston Red Sox reign supreme in the AL.

And while Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts may drive the hype machine as the AL seeks its fourth straight win with home-field advantage in the World Series up for grabs, David Ortiz should bask in the spotlight as he gets set to ride off into the sunset.

He spoke about playing in his last All-Star Game, per ESPN.com’s Scott Lauber:

Having a break is great, you know what I’m saying? But it’s not like I’m going to another All-Star Game as a player. Getting around 3 million votes, that’s a lot of people that would like to see you out there. That’s something I really appreciate, that people take their time to vote for myself and my teammates and want us to be there as a massive group.

Tuesday will mark Ortiz’s 10th All-Star appearance, and it will serve not only as validation of his personal success this year, but as recognition of everything he’s accomplished over the course of an illustrious and hardware-clad career.

Joining Boston’s talented group in Southern California will be a slew of Baltimore Orioles sluggers, several of whom have the power necessary to tilt the game in the AL’s favor at a moment’s notice.

Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo have both shone to this point in the season, and their vision at the plate figures to be an invaluable resource for an AL side that will be looking to keep some of MLB’s hottest arms at bay.

Prediction

Both squads are plenty stacked, so trying to nitpick with regard to which has the edge from a micro perspective is a somewhat futile practice.

But if there’s one macro factor that could decide things, it’s the NL’s outrageous pitching staff led by Jake Arrieta, Max Scherzer, Johnny Cueto and Jose Fernandez, among others.

Spreading those four pitchers out over nine innings would be scary enough, but the fact that manager Terry Collins will also have the likes of Jon Lester, Jeurys Familia, Kenley Jansen and Drew Pomeranz at his disposal means there’s some serious potential for the NL to keep the AL in check throughout the evening.

It may not be the most thrilling affair, but if Collins’ arms pitch up to par, the National League could be staring at its first All-Star Game win since 2012.

Prediction: National League 5, American League 3

2016 MLB All-Star Game: Starting Pitchers, Lineups Revealed for Summer Showcase

Lineups for the 2016 MLB All-Star Game in San Diego were revealed at a press conference Monday afternoon in Southern California, and San Francisco Giants hurler Johnny Cueto and Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale were tabbed as the starting pitchers for this year’s Midsummer Classic, per Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller

Cueto earned the nod for manager Terry Collins’ National League side after going 13-1 with a league-high four complete games during the first half of the season. The 30-year-old also owns a 2.47 ERA and league-leading mark of 0.4 home runs allowed per nine innings.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle‘s John Shea, Cueto will be the first Giants pitcher to start an All-Star Game since Matt Cain in 2012.

On the flip side, American League manager Ned Yost will hand the ball to Sale. The White Sox pitcher has gone 14-3 with three complete games and a 3.38 ERA in 18 first-half starts.

Facing those two esteemed pitchers will be stellar lineups packed with plenty of power and speed. Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros will lead off for the AL, while Ben Zobrist will get things started for the NL at Petco Park:

The NL lineup underwent a bit of a shift in recent days after starting outfielders Dexter Fowler (hamstring) and Yoenis Cespedes (quad) were ruled out with injuries, so Carlos Gonzalez and Marcell Ozuna will assume their spots in Collins’ starting nine.

Sticking with the NL, San Diego Padres first baseman Wil Myers will start at designated hitter in front of a home crowd that figures to meet his arrival at the plate with raucous applause.

According to Miller, Collins handed the starting honor to Myers for a number of reasons:

On the AL side, all eyes will be on designated David Ortiz—who’s batting cleanup—in his final All-Star Game before he retires.

“I’ve seen some other players in their final season just be part of the All-Star Game—Mariano [Rivera], Cal Ripken, Ken Griffey,” Ortiz said, per ESPN.com’s Scott Lauber. “It’s something that as a player you’re always going to look at it as, I made it. As many times as I have, it’s something that’s very special and something I’ll never forget about.”

However, the NL will look to dethrone Ortiz and the AL with home-field advantage in the World Series on the line. The NL hasn’t tasted victory in the Midsummer Classic since 2012 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Speaking of trends, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout will attempt to become the first player in MLB history to win three consecutive All-Star Game MVP awards after taking home the hardware with stellar showings in 2014 and 2015.

Starling Marte, Jay Bruce, Drew Pomeranz Named All-Star Game Injury Replacements

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce and San Diego Padres starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz were named to the National League All-Star roster as injury replacements, MLB announced Saturday.

Marte, Bruce and Pomeranz will replace the Chicago Cubs’ Dexter Fowler and the New York Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes and Noah Syndergaard.

Fowler is nursing a hamstring injury that sent him to the disabled list June 19, according to ESPN.com’s Jesse Rogers. Cespedes left the Mets’ game Friday evening with a right quad strain, and Syndergaard is dealing with what’s being termed “arm fatigue,” per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

DiComo also relayed an update regarding which Mets players will still attend the festivities:

Fowler was originally voted in as a starter after batting .290 with seven home runs, 28 RBI and a .398 on-base percentage prior to his stint on the DL.

Cespedes, who also comprised one-third of the NL’s starting outfield, was tied for fifth in the league with 21 home runs entering Saturday. Furthermore, he’s posted a batting average (.302), on-base percentage (.372) and slugging percentage (.583) that would rank as career bests.

According to MLB’s official press release, Marcell Ozuna of the Miami Marlins and Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies will start in place of Fowler and Cespedes.

Marte and Bruce will also be afforded opportunities to shine.

The Pirates outfielder is in the midst of his best year at the plate, having posted a .316 batting average, six home runs and 32 RBI in 80 games. Marte’s 27 stolen bases also rank No. 2 among all MLB players entering Saturday’s action.

As for Bruce, the Reds slugger will make his third-career All-Star appearance after clubbing 18 home runs and driving in 62 runs through his first 81 games of the season. However, Bruce’s batting average of .265 is what’s really worth writing home about.

Coming off consecutive seasons in which he batted lower than .230, Bruce has turned the corner and displayed a touch more discipline for the rebuilding Reds.

Finally, Pomeranz will take over for Syndergaard and have the pleasure of pitching in front of a home crowd at Petco Park.

Though the 27-year-old is just 8-7 in 17 starts, he’s posted a stellar 2.47 ERA while striking out what would amount to a career-best 10.1 batters per nine innings.

The All-Star Game is slated to start at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Craig Kimbrel Injury: Updates on Red Sox Closer’s Knee

Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and will undergo surgery on his left knee, according to WEEI.com’s Ryan Hannable.

Continue for updates.

Kimbrel Out 3-6 Weeks

Saturday, July 9

Kimbrel was ruled out Friday due to knee soreness, per the Boston Globe‘s Alex Speier. An MRI revealed the right-hander has a torn medial meniscus, according to MLB Roster Moves.

On Friday, the Red Sox announced they had acquired reliever Brad Ziegler from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for two minor-league players.

Ziegler has never been a hard thrower, and at 36 years old, he isn’t going to blow batters away consistently. But he has the repertoire necessary to hold down the fort while Kimbrel is on the shelf.

Not only do right-handed batters hit just .224 off Ziegler, but his changeup is notoriously difficult to make contact with.

According to FanGraphs’ August Fagerstrom, Ziegler’s changeup “was the hardest pitch in all of baseball to lay off last year” because it spun out of the zone 85 percent of the time. Remarkably, opposing batters swung at those offerings 54 percent of the time.

Brad Ziegler to Red Sox: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction

The Boston Red Sox announced the acquisition of relief pitcher Brad Ziegler from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday in exchange for minor leaguers Jose Almonte and Luis Alejandro Basabe

The move came on the heels of news that Red Sox reliever Craig Kimbrel was unavailable to pitch Friday evening because of what was originally called left knee soreness, as USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale noted at the time.

Kimbrel was later diagnosed with a torn medial meniscus that will require surgery, putting him on the 15-day disabled list, per the Red Sox. Manager John Farrell told reporters that Ziegler and Koji Uehara will share the closer’s role until Kimbrel returns.

Once Kimbrel recovers, Ziegler will be a strong contingency plan as a closer who can bolster the team’s bullpen as a setup man.

“From a baseball standpoint you have a team that’s just a couple of games out of first and there’s a lot of opportunity there,” Ziegler said Saturday, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert

In 38.1 innings so far this season, Ziegler has notched 18 saves while posting a 2.82 ERA, 1.461 WHIP, 27 strikeouts and 15 walks.

Those numbers may not be wildly impressive, but Ziegler is known for being one of MLB’s tougher matchups against right-handed hitting. Now in his ninth professional season, he has held right-handed batters to an average of .224. Conversely, lefties have recorded a .273 average working against the 36-year-old.

With a solid three-pitch arsenal that includes a fastball, slider and changeup, Ziegler should be able to help patch up some of Boston’s bullpen woes.

Entering Saturday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Red Sox relievers rank eighth among all American League teams with a shaky 3.92 ERA.
