David Ortiz and Boston Red Sox Reportedly Agree to 2-Year Deal

The Boston Red Sox and David Ortiz have come to terms on a two-year deal worth $26 million, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com. Incentives could raise the value of the deal to a maximum of $30 million.

The Sox reportedly made a qualifying $13.3 million offer to Ortiz just before Friday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline, according to Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com.

Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston reported in late October that Ortiz and the Sox were close to agreeing on a two-year deal worth about $25 million, but could not come to an agreement on the terms of the deal.

Rumors were circling this week about the Texas Rangers‘ interest in acquiring Ortiz’s services should he not agree to terms with the Sox before Friday’s deadline, according to Nick Cafardo of Boston.com. The Rangers’ alleged involvement may have been the tipping point for the Red Sox staff to budge in negotiations and make the move to retain Ortiz.

Boston was wise to keep the face of its franchise in town for at least the next two seasons, as it continues the transition it started by shipping several of its best players out of New England before the 2012 MLB trade deadline.

In August, Boston sent expensive All-Stars Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett to the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of a nine-player trade.

Ortiz’s veteran presence will be critical for the team as it attempts to pick up the pieces after a very disappointing 2012 season.

Ortiz, who turns 37 this month, played in just 90 games for the Sox in 2012. He suffered an Achilles injury in mid-July and only played in one more contest the rest of the season

In limited action, Ortiz still showed he can produce, starting out the season hot by notching 23 homers and 60 RBI and recording a .318 average.

This is a fitting beginning to the end of Ortiz’s illustrious career. It’s good that he refrained from soiling his name by becoming a hired gun for the New York Yankees, Rangers or Baltimore Orioles.

It’s best that he’s staying put in Boston to write the final chapter of his 16-year career as part of a team he helped revive from the losing abyss with two Worlds Series crowns.

2013 MLB Free Agents: Emerging Stars Who Deserve Big Paydays

Although the MLB playoffs are in full swing, it’s never too early to begin thinking about the happenings of the 2013 free-agency period. After all, free agency is the time when top players are on the move and shift the power structure of the league as a result.

Smaller market teams aren’t really competitive in free agency, and thus won’t be largely in on the bidding for these emerging stars. But they’ll still be curious to see which of their rivals will be willing to throw down some big money to bring in these guys.

Take a look at some of those top emerging stars who will lock down big paydays because of both their potential and their performance in 2012.

B.J. Upton, Center Fielder

Upton has been rumored to be on the trading block for the past few seasons near the trade deadline. Because of that, he’s unlikely to come back at a home-town discount for the Tampa Bay Rays.

He didn’t do anything to hurt his stock in 2012 as he got ready to be a free agent in 2013. In the month of September alone, with his time in the wild-card chase, he hit 12 home runs. That gave him a career-high 28 dingers.

Upton is a solid commodity bringing both the glove and steady bat. He’s also got the speed to make opponents pay once he’s on base.

Michael Bourn, Center Fielder

Bourn isn’t going to hit for power and “wow” you with his clutch hitting. But there’s something to be said about the outfielder’s excellent ability to get on base and hurt opponents with his feet.

In 2012, the speedy Bourn totaled 42 stolen bases but had 61 in both 2009 and 2011.

His glove is another huge positive. He’s committed just 16 errors in his seven-year career and has a nearly perfect fielding percentage.

It’s hard to put a price tag on Bourn, but he’ll likely bring in a considerable haul from a contender needing front-of-the-lineup help.

Kyle Lohse, SP

Lohse has had a tumultuous MLB career with many ups and downs. The 34-year-old is coming off of the best season of a long but overall successful career. He went 16-3 and recorded a career-best 2.86 ERA in the process.

It’s hard to call 2012 a breakout year for Lohse, but he’s definitely emerged as a solid middle-of-the-rotation option. He won’t warrant a long-term deal but will be able to capitalize off of his excellent 2012 to earn a big pay day this offseason.

Terry Francona Officially Named Cleveland Indians Manager

The Cleveland Indians will reportedly hire Terry Francona as the team’s manager after finishing a disappointing 68-94 in 2012.

UPDATE: Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:20 p.m. ET

The Cleveland Indians have named Terry Francona the team’s new manager via the team’s official Twitter account:

Despite Francona’s hesitance to admit it, there does appear to be truth to the reporting from earlier Saturday afternoon. We’ll just have to wait for Monday for the details of the deal and to hear from Francona again about his new job.

—End of Update—

UPDATE: Saturday, Oct. 6, at 6:40 p.m. ET

Although multiple sources are reporting via Twitter that Francona and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to terms, Francona denied that much as happened yet on Saturday night, according to a report from ESPN.

“‘The report is very premature,’ Francona said Saturday night. ‘When there’s a decision to make, I’ll make it.'”

The Tribe are looking to sign their new manager before next week’s organizational meetings in Goodyear, Arizona.

—End of update—

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com first reported the deal via Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

Cleveland got off to a hot start but simmered down to finish 44-41 at the All-Star break. The second half of the season was a nightmare as the team fell apart, finishing 24-53.

Cleveland needed someone to blame for its awful second-half performance and found that someone in former manager Manny Acta, who got the ax with six games left in the season.

Sandy Alomar Jr., a former Indians catcher, took over to finish out the season.

Both Alomar Jr. and Francona were candidates for the job and interviewed earlier this week.

Francona last managed the Boston Red Sox before being let go after the 2011 season. He won the 2005 and 2007 World Series with the team.

Since mutually agreeing to leave the Sox amid one of the worst September collapses in baseball history, Francona has worked for ESPN as a TV broadcaster.

But, according to an AP report on NESN.com, being away from the game gave him some perspective and reignited his desire to manage again.

The choice isn’t surprising. Francona was a former adviser to the Tribe in 2001 and has maintained close ties with general manager Chris Antonetti.

Despite being seemingly passed over for the job, Alomar Jr. is expected to be willing to come aboard with Francona. But that will likely be determined by his ability to secure work elsewhere around the league.

MLB Trade Rumors: Top Landing Spots for Remaining Pitchers on the Market

Where are the top landing spots for the best remaining MLB pitchers reportedly on the market?

The MLB’s Tuesday trade deadline is rapidly approaching and teams are, as usual, hurrying to try to make short or long-term fixes to their ball clubs. Teams are made and broken with late July deals of this kind.

Due to the new collective bargaining agreement, recent changes in trade deadline rules have altered the way teams are approaching this year’s deadline. Teams are less willing to take on “rental players” due to those changes which specify that teams will not receive draft-pick compensation for acquiring those players.

Let’s take a look at the big name pitchers who are reportedly on the trade market and where they will likely end up, if anywhere, before Tuesday’s deadline.

Josh Johnson, SP, Miami Marlins

Johnson has a favorable contract situation and has a vast amount of potential working in his favor. He’s a very desired commodity, one of the best potential targets for clubs looking to improve the middle-to-bottom of their rotation. His ceiling is certainly much higher, but with his inconsistent play, especially on the road this season, is he worth the risk?

That’s the question teams are asking themselves right now as the Marlins continue to desire a hefty ransom in exchange for the right-hander.

Top Landing Spot: Texas Rangers: With the Angels adding Zack Greinke to their rotation, the Rangers need to make a move in order to keep pace. The Rangers are reportedly interested and engaged in talks, but not fully committed to the idea of surrendering the asking price due to concerns about Johnson. Also, they don’t need to hoard prospects when they are ready to compete and win a World Series NOW.

Most Likely Landing Spot: Miami Marlins: The Marlins are asking way too much for their ace in a down year. If they are willing to get more flexible, something may catch fire. However, as it sits right now, don’t be surprised

Matt Garza, SP, Chicago Cubs

Matt Garza may have been shutdown until after the trade deadline, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation and rumors about where the Chicago Cubs right-hander will end up.

According to Jon Heyman, CBS Sports baseball insider, the Cubs are reportedly looking to move the starting pitcher after breaking off contract extension talks this past spring. The timing of Garza’s injury may have stalled the Cubs ability to move him before Tuesday’s deadline, but they certainly are not going to stop there.

Heyman also said the team will more than likely continue to pursue trade options into the winter if they cannot move him now.

Top Landing Spot: Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers need to upgrade their starting rotation as they begin to make a push for the postseason. As buyers right now, they may be able to cut a deal to get Garza cheaper due to the injury that has him sidelined until after the trade deadline. However, the Cubs may be willing to wait until winter in order to get full value for Garza.

Most Likely Landing Spot: Chicago Cubs: The Dodgers are buying right now and may be able to lure Garza away from Chicago for the right price. However, due to his injury, the Cubs may be stuck and unable to move him as desired.

James Shields, SP, Tampa Bay Rays

Shields told media that his recent struggles haven’t been attributed to the mental effects of trade speculation and rumors that have surrounded the right-hander.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, he doesn’t think the Rays will move Shields before the deadline.

“All this conjecture does occur, and there’s reasons why they’re pointing at James. But I still believe in my heart of hearts that it’s not going to happen, and it’s going to move on and we’re going to be normal and he’s going to pitch like he can over the last two months of the season.”

At the same time, if Shields doesn’t recover from this slump he is in, this may be the most opportune time for them to benefit from dealing their former ace.

Top Landing Spot: Atlanta Braves: The Braves are interested in Shields and are currently in position to make some noise in the NL pennant race. They’ve got young pitching talent that Tampa desires and would be ideal trade partners. They need to do something in order to maintain pace with the other wild-card hopefuls:  Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals and L.A. Dodgers. All of those teams are looking to improve at the trade deadline and the Braves are no different.

Most Likely Landing Spot: Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays will likely hold onto Shields and hope he turns the corner and returns to his former self down the stretch. The team is currently in the running for a wild-card berth and selling now, especially a talent like Shields, would signal giving up by general manager Andrew Friedman.
