MLB Free Agency: 10 Smartest Signings of the 2010 Hot Stove Thus Far

MLB Free Agency is still on the minds of everyone in baseball as the Hot Stove continues to simmer.

The biggest names have already been signed to mega deals, which has left clubs around baseball looking for what’s left.

But December and January are usually when the biggest free-agent bargains can be found for relatively cheap. Already there have been some great deals on some solid players so far.

I apologize if it sounds like a late-night infomercial, but the point is that there have been some really good signings that don’t include triple digits and a buyout clause. Here are the 10 smartest signings so far.

MLB Trade Rumors: Latest on Felix Hernandez, David Price and More

MLB Trade Rumors continue to swirl as spring training gets closer, and April 1 is not that far away either.

With the bigger names off the market, attention now turns to the role players and others either looking for a new home or that might be moved soon. A lot of the focus now will shift to Zack Greinke and the like as possible candidates for relocation.

Greinke was the hot name even when Cliff Lee was still on the market, though nothing seems to be set in stone yet. But there have been rumors, especially involving the Yankees and the Blue Jays.

Here is the latest on Greinke and some other big names.

MLB Trade Rumors: The Latest on Zack Greinke, Cliff Lee and Prince Fielder

The annual Winter Meetings in Orlando might be in the rear-view mirror, but that doesn’t mean the MLB Trade Rumors haven’t slowed down at all.

The shock and the outrage over Jayson Werth’s deal with the Nationals has subsided, being replaced by the shock and outrage over Carl Crawford’s mega-deal with the Red Sox. Whoever offered Cliff Lee the seventh year on a contract offer was being kept undisclosed like a military secret, and there was talk of the other owners possibly amounting to what would be an alliance to raise the luxury tax for the Yankees and the Red Sox.

I thought Disney World was supposed to be The Happiest Place on Earth.

Anyway, there are still big names out there to be had, and here’s the latest on some of those names.

MLB Trade Rumors continue to swirl as the Hot Stove heats up during the annual Winter Meetings.

The talk of the meetings was obviously the mega-contract Jayson Werth signed with the Washington Nationals, but there have been other rumors as well.

In the last two days, the Blue Jays shipped off their best starter in Shaun Marcum to Milwaukee for a prospect, and the Padres finally unloaded first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to Boston for a bounty of prospects.

There are more big names who have been named in trade rumors, so here are some of the bigger names that could be moved.

MLB Rumors: Who Will Play SS, Close for Yankees if Derek Jeter, Mariano Walk?

MLB rumors continue to heat up the hot stove—or at least New York City—as we inch closer and closer to February.

And that magical date when pitchers and catchers report.

Around baseball, it’s actually been a somewhat quiet offseason for player movement. No free agents of note have signed, with the exception of the reports that former Yankee Javier Vasquez will sign with Florida.

But not even the much-coveted Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford have been in the news as much as Derek Jeter’s very public contract talks with the Yankees have been.

There have been conflicting reports about the terms that Jeter is demanding. The Yankees have taken a very hard line in negotiating, and as of this posting, there is still no deal.

Much less publicized, but just as—and maybe more—alarming, is that the great closer Mariano Rivera is also without a deal and on the free-agent market.

Eventually, when it’s all said and done, both are expected to remain Yankees.

But, for the sake or argument, here are some options to replace two of the more celebrated players to ever wear the pinstripes.
