White Sox’s Avisail Garcia Robs Chris Davis of Game-Tying HR in 9th Inning

Nope!

With his Chicago White Sox clinging to a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning Saturday, outfielder Avisail Garcia saved the day.

Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis sailed a would-be dinger deep to right, but Garcia showed off some crazy bounce with a perfectly timed jump and brought it back.

Garcia was pumped afterward, leaping excitedly with two hands in the air before getting his game face back on. He had every right to be fired up, though—even Davis gave him a nod of respect.

What an incredible play. Chicago held on to win 3-2.

Tigers’ Alex Avila Makes Incredible Leaping Grab While Falling in Stands

Thanks to Miguel Cabrera’s calf injury, Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila is out of place at first base.

Before his first career start at the new position, Avila spoke humbly to reporters:

If Avila meant “unbelievably good” when he said he’d be “adequate,” he was right. With his team up 4-0 in the top of the fourth, the 28-year-old made an absolutely insane catch as he fell into the stands.

Looks like “adequate” has a new definition.

David Ortiz Gets Drilled in Head While Breaking Up Double Play

David Ortiz took a throw off his dome in the bottom of the fifth inning as his Boston Red Sox tried to rally back against the Houston Astros on Friday.

With men on first and third with one out, Hanley Ramirez hit a grounder to the hot corner. An inning-ending double play appeared imminent.

But Big Papi came barreling into second base and got rocked in the head by a throw from Jose Altuve. The ball flew all the way into the stands, and Ramirez was credited with an RBI groundout to cut Houston’s lead to 5-4.

It wasn’t enough for Boston to win the game, as the Astros prevailed 12-8, but hey—way to use your head there, big fella.

Rays’ Kevin Kiermaier Hits the Deck When Pigeon Flies Near His Head

Nothing ruins a big hit like a full-fledged bird attack.

In this case, outfielder Kevin Kiermaier didn’t quite get attacked by a rogue pigeon at the Tampa Bay Rays-New York Yankees game Friday night, but he did get scared.

And, like the grown man he is, Kiermaier dropped to the ground. At least he had a big RBI moments earlier in the top of the 12th.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ Starling Marte Does Rolling Front-Flip Sliding into 2nd Base

There’s a certain beauty to a perfect slide. It’s graceful, smooth and pretty much exactly the opposite of what Starling Marte did on Saturday.

While trying to swipe second base in the bottom of the seventh against the Atlanta Braves, the Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder took an ugly tumble. As he sped toward the bag, Marte used his chest as a brake and wound up flipping over completely.

The worst part (aside from the definite pain)? Pedro Alvarez fouled off the pitch.

Back to first you go, Starling.

CC Sabathia Held Back After Astros’ Brett Oberholtzer Throws at A-Rod

Houston Astros pitcher Brett Oberholtzer got rocked by the New York Yankees on Saturday, allowing a grand slam to catcher Brian McCann and a two-run dinger to outfielder Chris Young.

Having allowed six runs and still not out of the second inning, the lefty was frustrated. So he took his anger out on Alex Rodriguez by throwing a fastball at his midsection.

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia was having none of that, though, as the big fella had to be held back by manager Joe Girardi.

After the Yankees won, 9-6, Girardi was candid about the near-scuffle, per Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle:

If you thought McCann and Young beat up on Oberholtzer, just imagine what Sabathia would’ve done.

The left-handed pitcher won’t have to worry about that in Triple-A, though:

Elderly Tigers Fans Show Off Entertaining Handshake at Game

Baseball is still America’s pastime—and with baseball comes sweet handshakes.

During the Detroit Tigers-Chicago White Sox game on Friday night, a lovable elderly duo got their groove on with a heartwarming handshake.

Try finding this at another sporting event. Baseball might take its lumps, but it’ll never die.

CBS Error Says New York Mets Lost to Maple Leafs, Toronto Responds

Even though CBS New York is not a Korean newspaper, these mistakes aren’t uncommon in this business.

On Thursday, the station botched a score between the local New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays. So, no, despite what this screenshot would have you believe, the Toronto Maple Leafs did not leap out of the NHL and try their hand on the diamond.

The Leafs did what any sound organization would do in this situation, though, and whipped out a Simpsons reference.

And for that, they should be commended.

Chris Davis’ Bunt to Beat the Shift Launches Past 3rd Base Before Dropping

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis doesn’t care much for that pesky shift. On Monday night at Camden Yards in a 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, he did something about it.

Facing Phillies starter Aaron Harang in the second inning, the left-handed slugger bombed a bunt past third base and got a single out of it, which is reportedly the second bunt hit of his career, per Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.

In a February interview on 105.7 The Fan (transcribed by Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com), Davis said that he was adding the bunt to his arsenal:

For me, it was just a comfort thing and I have worked on it this offseason. I’ve probably worked on it more this offseason than I have in the past. If it’s a one-run game, I’m probably not going to lay one down, but there are situations where unselfishly it’s probably the best thing to do. It’s definitely a weapon I can use against other teams.

It looks like Davis’ offseason work has paid off—although he probably didn’t practice smashing ‘em quite like he did Monday.

Astros SS Carlos Correa Gives Batting Gloves, Bat to Young Fan with Cancer

The Houston Astros lost to the Seattle Mariners by an 8-1 score on Saturday, and Astros shortstop Carlos Correa went 0-for-3.

But the rookie won the day. Correa met with a young fan with cancer prior to the opening pitch, and the 20-year-old gave the kid a bat and a pair of batting gloves.

Take this as your daily reminder that life transcends sports.
