In the bottom of the first inning against Houston, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips pulled a cruel, cruel trick on Astros shortstop Jonathan Villar when he forced him to slide directly into his butt while protecting second base.
As if his head placement wasn’t embarrassing enough, Villar was called out on the play.

Nearly five years ago, the character Mac from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia wrote a “love” letter to his favorite Phillies player, Chase Utley, asking if the two could “have a catch.” He made sure to compliment Utley’s hair and ask about the second baseman’s relationship with his father while he was at it.
Now, given that Utley is really busy playing a lot of baseball for the Phillies, Mac has only just now gotten his response.
Utley shows his appreciation for Mac’s enthusiasm and even throws in some stickers of the two of them in his letter. And although Utley says he doesn’t have time for a game of catch with Mac, he does finish by stating that fans like him make his life a “grand slam.”

Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish was in complete control of the Minnesota Twins through six innings Friday night, and this GIF of his filthy curveball in the fifth exemplifies it perfectly.
Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe saw an 80 mph slider and 94 mph fastball before Darvish threw this 61 mph curveball, which Plouffe started swinging at absurdly early.
Darvish had a no-hitter through six innings before eventually picking up the loss after giving up three runs in the seventh.

Rick Monday once made a great play, and now he’s being immortalized as a bobblehead.
On April 25, 1976, during a game at Dodgers Stadium, center fielder Rick Monday, then with the Chicago Cubs, saw two protesters come onto the field with the intention of burning an American flag. Monday quickly sprang into action, grabbing the American flag away from the man and his son before it could be lit.
Tonight, the Dodgers will give out Rick Monday flag-saving bobbleheads for their game against the Cubs in one of the most patriotic promotions of all time.

It’s good to take time to appreciate the little things.
The San Francisco Giants currently have the worst record in the NL West, but this doesn’t stop Pablo Sandoval and Hunter Pence from sharing a dance as part of their adorable dugout handshake.
Nice footwork, guys.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale gave up an uncharacteristic eight runs in seven innings against the Texas Rangers on Friday night.
After being told he was done for the evening, the 24-year-old southpaw decided to take out his frustration on an ice chest in the dugout. Sale started banging on the chest with his glove, then both hands until he finally knocked it over.

If it wasn’t so clearly laid out, this might be a time when there would be crying in baseball.
Last night, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was hit in the knee by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The pitch was ruled a strike, however, because Phillips swung at it and was called out.
Meanwhile, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Angels shortstop Eric Aybar was hit in the knee by a pitch but swung past the check point.
Aybar was also called out despite the hit by pitch.
How often does lightning strike twice like this? You can watch the video of the two simultaneous horribly unlucky strikeouts below.

Houston Astros pitcher Brad Peacock got drilled by a baseball on Friday by the most unlikely of people: the umpire.
The ump’s throw to the unsuspecting pitcher hits him right in his chest, and as the announcer notes, Peacock doesn’t seem real pleased about it.
