Here’s a look at some unheralded players who played well yesterday.
Dontrelle Willis, Detroit Tigers
The D-Train threw six scoreless innings to beat the Twins. He gave up four hits and two walks with six Ks to improve to 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA.
Carl Pavano, Minnesota Twins
Pavano took the loss but threw a complete game (eight innings), allowing two earned runs with five Ks. He sits at 3-2 with a 3.73 ERA.
David Freese, St. Louis Cardinals
Freese had a whale of a game, going 3-for-3 with two runs, a HR, and six RBI. He’s hitting .328 on the year and now has 14 RBI.
Justin Smoak, Texas Rangers
Smoak went 2-for-4 with two runs, his first career HR, and two RBI. He’s hitting .158.
Kelly Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks
Johnson went 4-for-4 with a run, a HR, and three RBI. He’s hitting .320 with 17 runs, nine HRs, and 18 RBI.
Adam LaRoche, Arizona Diamondbacks
LaRoche went 3-for-5 with three runs, two HRs, and five RBI. He’s hitting .299 with 17 RBI.
Chris Snyder, Arizona Diamondbacks
Snyder went 2-for-5 with two runs, a HR, and three RBI. He’s hitting .278 with 12 RBI.
John Buck, Toronto Blue Jays
Buck went ape sh…wait, this is a family-friendly site. He went hog wild, 3-for-4 with three HRs and five RBI. He’s still hitting just .194, so don’t get too carried away thinking you need to add him.
Reid Brignac, Tampa Bay Rays
Brignac went 2-for-5 with a HR and three RBI. He’s hitting .286 with 10 RBI.
Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds
Arroyo beat the Astros, giving up two runs in 6.2 innings with seven Ks. He improved to 1-2 with a 6.37 ERA.
Evan Meek, Pittsburgh Pirates
Meek helped settle the Pirates’ closer woes by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save. His ERA is a mere 0.60.
Yorvit Torrealba, San Diego Padres
Torrealba went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. He’s hitting .286.
Wade LeBlanc, San Diego Padres
Wade LeBlancked the Brewers over 6.1 innings. He gave up just one hit and struck out six without issuing a walk. He’s 2-0 with a 0.52 ERA.
