Tim Kurkjian Gets Destroyed in the Milwaukee Brewers Sausage Race

It wasn’t even close. At all.

ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian was thoroughly embarrassed Monday night after deciding against his better judgment to participate in the Milwaukee Brewers Sausage Race (click here for video).

Kurkjian spent the better part of an afternoon stretching and running stairs at Miller Park in preparation for the race. He even interviewed legendary Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker before the game for some friendly advice.

“Stupidly, I agreed to run in the sausage race tonight. Do you have any advice for me?” Kurkjian asked Uecker. “Is this the end of my career as a journalist?”

“I think this is the start of something really big,” Uecker said. “I think you got a road show coming up. … What could we call you? ‘Slim Tim and His Sausage-Casing Friends’? … What took you so long?”

Uecker‘s optimism was all for naught, however. Like a thoroughbred smashing its shoulders leaving the starting gate, Kurkjian found himself out of the race from the very beginning.

Busy chatting with the crowd, the ESPN analyst was facing the wrong direction when the signal to run came down—a dire setback for anyone running in a giant hot dog costume.

ESPN sportscaster Sean McDonough was on hand to call the race and took no prisoners as his colleague struggled about in the hot dog outfit.

“Tim…sorta doesn’t know what to do,” McDonough said. “John Kruk said he [Kurkjian] is really one of those mini cocktail wieners, based on his size.”

When the dust settled, Kurkjian finished somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 lengths behind the victor.

There are so many factors that contributed to Kurkjian‘s sweaty implosion at Miller Park that it’s difficult to decide where to begin the autopsy. Joe Lucia of Awful Announcing says Kurkjian‘s decision to wear pants was a red-flag indicator that this endeavor would only end badly.

“I spoke with Matt Lindner, a Chicago-based writer friend of mine who actually worked as a Racing Sausage during his time with the Brewers,” Lucia writes. “Lindner opined that Kurkjian‘s choice of slacks was ‘ill-advised at best,’ and that many of the runners in the race dress like ‘they’re going to gym class.'”

You’ve got to stay nimbly bimbly, Tim. You don’t see Usain Bolt running the hundred meters in Zubaz (though we’d like to).

With that said, Kurkjian owes his viewers a redemption tour. This time next year, he needs to walk back onto that field wearing shorts and facing the starting line.

Do it for the game, Slim Tim. Do it for journalism.

With one out in the top of the sixth inning Monday night, Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Anthony Gose looked to track down a pop fly from Yankees shortstop Brendan Ryan and prevent a double or triple.

Not only did Gose successfully track down the ball, he completed the catch despite colliding hard into the outfield wall.

Mike Trout Becomes 1st MLB Player Since Ken Griffey Jr. to Get Own Nike Cleat

Mike Trout’s year just keeps getting better.

Before this season began, the Los Angeles Angels star received a monster contract extension. Now, he has his own Nike cleat: the Nike Lunar Vapor Trout.

A shoe made for Trout needs to represent the player well. It should be quick, stylish and a little bit flashy. Most importantly, it should produce great results.

Nike explained how the shoe will help Trout’s performance on the field:

The first signature cleat for star outfielder Mike Trout, the Nike Lunar Vapor Trout redefines the balance of speed and power in baseball and embodies the future direction of the game. Informed by Trout’s own insights, the Nike Lunar Vapor Trout is designed for the directional speed needed to steal more bases, get to more balls in the outfield, and get out of the batters box quickly.

The cleat, complete with a Nike Lunarlon foam midsole, was designed in order to be light and comfortable. A split Pebax speed plate was also used to help the outfielder move quickly across the field.

Trout was pretty grateful to be in this position at just 22 years old:

Major League Baseball tweeted out a cool fact:

Nike Baseball also shared a couple of videos to show off the Nike Lunar Vapor Trout:

Fans can already pre-order the cleat, and the Nike Lunar Vapor Trout will be available at select stores starting on July 12.

Reds’ Brandon Phillips Wins Battle with Heckler with Hilarious Message on Ball

Brandon Phillips loves messing with fans, so when the Cincinnati Reds are in an opponent’s ballpark, he steps up his game.

The Reds visited PNC Park to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game series this week. Throughout Thursday’s afternoon game, one fan was reportedly heckling Reds first baseman Joey Votto.

After a rain delay later in the game, the heckler turned his attention to Phillips, according to Reddit:

Rain delay in the 7th inning, but afterwards, he got started on Brandon Phillips. Yelling “Hey everybody, look how slow Phillips is!”. My brother said the stadium was almost empty at this point, so his heckles rang loud and clear. According to him, Phillips even looked over and chuckled at one point.

This Pirates fan had no chance of rattling someone who loves the spotlight the way the Reds second baseman does.

After the game, Phillips gave the heckler a baseball with the following message on it:

Dear Drunk Guy, Thank You 4 All The Love & Support!! Now Take This Ball And Shut The Phuck Up!! 🙂

From Yours Truly,
Brandon Phillips

Don’t worry, Dat Dude  signed the baseball:

Phillips was a good sport about the whole thing and even took a selfie with the heckler:

Rays’ Matt Joyce Hits Ball Back into Pitching Machine During Batting Practice

The Tampa Bays Rays’ Matt Joyce did something you may never see again, no matter how many baseball games you go to.

During batting practice before Thursday’s game against the Houston Astros, Joyce hit a ball off the top of the cage. Somehow, the ball landed in the pitching machine and came right back to the batter:

Obviously Joyce wasn’t expecting that to happen, so he wasn’t ready for the pitch. It would’ve been even more impressive had he hit the same ball twice in a matter of seconds.

Boston’s Brock Holt Makes Diving Grab After Jonny Gomes Loses It in the Lights

The Boston Red Sox‘s outfield has this whole “team defense” thing figured out.

After Jonny Gomes lost a fly ball in the light in left field against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, Brock Holtwho was playing center field for the first time in his professional careerbailed him out with a ridiculous diving catch he had no business making.

Boston would go on to beat the Twins, 2-1. As if Holt’s ridiculous catch wasn’t enough salt in Minnesota’s wounds, he’d go on to score both of the Red Sox’s runs.

Dodgers’ Hanley Ramirez Hides Snake in Juan Uribe’s Shoe

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Hanley Ramirez loves his pranks, especially when they involve scaring fellow teammate Juan Uribe.

Ramirez’s newest prank involved hiding a snake in Uribe’s shoe on Saturday. You can see a video of Uribe’s reaction above.

This isn’t the first time Ramirez has scared Uribe. Hanley once hid in Uribe’s locker before jumping out and scaring him.

Ben Roethlisberger Hits Pirates Coach Ray Searage During Batting Practice

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger may not be allowed to take batting practice at PNC Park anymore after what happened before a recent Pittsburgh Pirates game.

Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage found himself in a tough spot when Roethlisberger took batting practice. Searage was looking the other way in the outfield when the quarterback hit a line drive in his direction.

When a baseball is heading your way but you have no idea where it is, you have a couple of options. You can stand still and protect yourself, or you can get out of the way.

Searage went with the former, because how slim were the chances that the ball would actually hit him?

Unfortunately for the Pirates coach, the ball found him.

It doesn’t look like Searage was hurt by the ball, so he can just laugh it off and watch it on the blooper reel.
