Benches Clear During Red Sox-Rays Game, 4 Boston Members Ejected

After the two teams got in a scuffle last week, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays cleared the benches once again on Friday.

UPDATE: Saturday, May 31 at 1:55 p.m. ET

David Ortiz was not happy with Price’s pitch, and he had some choice words to say to the Rays pitcher, according to CSNNE.com:

You can’t be acting like a little girl out there. You’re not going to win every time. When you give it up, that’s an experience for the next time. If you’re going act like a little [expletive] when you give it up, bounce back and put your teammates in jeopardy, that’s going to cost you.

He knew he screwed up. He did that on his own. No manager sent him. No player was comfortable with the situation. He did that on his own. Which is (expletive). He can get somebody else hurt. You can’t be doing that (stuff).

It’s on. Next time [Price] better bring the gloves. I have no respect for him no more.

—End of update—

Rays pitcher David Price hit Mike Carp with a pitch in the fourth inning, bringing both teams out of their respective dugouts. Ortiz, who was also hit by a pitch in the first inning of the game, was especially upset and started shouting loudly at Price and in the direction of James Loney.

According to Gordon Edes from ESPNBoston.com, four members of the Red Sox were ejected during the game. Starting pitcher Brandon Workman, third base coach Brian Butterfield, manager John Farrell and bench coach Torey Lovullo were all sent to the showers early.

Despite all of the ejections, Boston still won, 3-2, in 10 innings.

Andre Ethier Stars as Johnny Utah in ‘Point Break Live’

Andre Ethier is an All-Star outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but it looks like he has also picked up some things from being out by Hollywood all these years.

The 32-year-old was pulled up on stage for Point Break Live, a live version of the 1991 classic Point Break. A member of the audience is always selected to play the role of Johnny Utah, which is played by Keanu Reeves in the film.

Watching Ethier play the role of an FBI agent should make you want to watch the real deal:

50 Cent Claims New York Cop Gave Him a Hard Time for Terrible First Pitch

Rapper 50 Cent’s first pitch was so bad that even the New York police want in on the fun.

On Friday’s Good Morning America, 50 Cent talked about his terrible first pitch before the Mets’ game on May 27. He even tried to blame the wild throw on Curtis Jackson, which is his real name.

Then 50 Cent caught everyone by surprise when he revealed he was pulled over by a New York cop and, instead of getting a ticket, received some ribbing.

The rapper also denied that the blooper was a publicity stunt, saying his pitch “slipped.”

Dr. James Andrews Is Helping Create a Mobile App to Aid in Arm-Injury Prevention

Major League Baseball has seen its fair share of serious arm injuries this season, so a couple of notable doctors are creating a mobile app that they hope will help prevent throwing injuries for future generations, especially at the youth level.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan, there have been 45 players who have undergone Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament replacement surgery) through the first two months of the 2014 season. That is an 80 percent increase from the same point last season.

ESPN.com’s Stephania Bell reports that famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who has performed countless surgeries on sports’ biggest starts throughout the years, and Dr. Kevin Wilk are working on creating a mobile app—Throw Like a Pro—that will educate players, coaches and parents.

The goal of the app is obviously to reduce arm and shoulder injuries in youth baseball. The app will focus on preventing injuries, but at the same time, the tips should be able to help long-term performance.

In an effort to make it as helpful as possible, the app will use data to assist users, via Bell: “The app, Throw Like a Pro, will be released in the coming weeks. When available, it will feature four main elements, all centered around scientific data and input from Andrews and Wilk.”

Here are descriptions of some of the sections:

  • Advice from the American Sports Medicine Institute, like throwing with proper mechanics rather than trying to light up the radar gun.
  • A preseason preparation guide and pregame warm-up routine
  • Pitch count and rest calculator, based on age

Those seem like very helpful sections. Every young pitcher wants to be able to throw as hard as Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, but throwing hard can be devastating to one’s health if the mechanics aren’t there.

If Andrews and Wilk are successful, Throw Like a Pro could change the way young baseball players train.

Jose Bautista Comes Up Throwing to Nab Billy Butler at First Base

A play like this shows just how good the Toronto Blue Jays have been lately.

The Kansas City Royals’ Billy Butler thought he had a single when he lined one into right field, but the Toronto Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista wasn’t going to concede the hit. Bautista came up throwing and threw Butler out fairly easily:

With his team clinging to a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, Bautista‘s laser looked like it would help push his team’s winning streak to 10 games. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they blew the lead in the ninth and went on to lose in extra innings.

Miguel Olivo Reportedly Bit Part of Alex Guerrero’s Ear off During Altercation

Miguel Olivo reportedly bit a part of teammate Alex Guerrero’s ear off in a fight during an Albuquerque Isotopes game on Monday night.

Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reported the shocking news:

Morosi also reported that the local police are now investigating the incident:

Olivo and Guerrero—teammates with the Triple-A affiliate for the Los Angeles Dodgers—exchanged blows in the dugout during the eighth inning against the Salt Lake Bees. The fight was so bad that the game itself had to be stopped briefly, per Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune:

According to Boras, Olivo took exception when Guerrero didn’t attempt to tag a runner, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times:

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports added more details after speaking with Boras:

According to Boras, Olivo first punched Guerrero, then apparently after having his arms restrained by others in the Iosotopes’ dugout, took a bite out of the ear of Guerrero. One other person who spoke to Isotopes personnel said a part of the ear actually fell to the dugout floor, and had to be reattached surgically.

(…)

“It’s assault and battery,” Boras said. “There’s nothing he could have said to prompt this.”

Former MLB pitcher Brian Bannister indicated that Olivo exuded an intimidating aura on the field and wasn’t one who took well to disagreements:

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti declined to go into specifics and confirmed only that Olivo and Guerrero had gotten into an altercation:

Only now is the severity of the fracas coming into full effect.

This only adds to what has been an already up-and-down season for the Dodgers, who are third in the National League West heading into Tuesday night. It doesn’t look good on the organization to have two players with the Triple-A affiliate creating this kind of mess.

In addition to the seriousness of Guerrero’s injury, the way the fight escalated is also notable, as it recalls the bizarre incident of Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield’s ear in their 1997 bout.

FanGraphs’ Jeff Sullivan joked that this goes against Olivo’s reputation for being a bit of a free swinger at the plate:

Given the fact that the police have been brought in, this incident could drag on for a while. Not only might Olivo face some sort of punishment from the Dodgers, but he could also be dealing with legal ramifications.

For Guerrero, this is a major speed bump in his brief MLB career. Los Angeles signed the Cuban infielder for $28 million back in October 2013, so the team’s long-term plans for the 27-year-old will have to be put on hold for the time being.

This was no doubt an ugly event and a black eye for the Dodgers as a whole.

‘Jungle Bird’ Gets Bodyslammed After Running onto Field at Nationals Park

Do you remember the infamous “Jungle Bird,” the man who crashed the 2012 U.S. Open and a 2013 match between Everton and Juventus all in the name of deforestation? Of course you do.

Well, he’s back, this time storming the field at Nationals Park during Washington’s matchup against the New York Mets.

Fans captured him getting bodyslammed by security after climbing the field’s wall in the ninth inning.

Something tells us this won’t be the last sporting event we see the Jungle Bird at.

Man in Superman Costume Breaks Up Fights at St. Louis Cardinals Games

Fans attending St. Louis Cardinals games at Busch Stadium have to be on their best behavior, or they might feel the wrath of the team’s superhero.

A man named Charlie Chartland, who identifies himself as the St. Louis Superman, breaks up fights around the stadium in a full costume, sometimes even laying on offending fans to prevent the fight from continuing.

He’s the hero that St. Louis deserves, not the one it needs right now.

Carlos Gomez Googled How to Talk to Rich People

Getting a big raise can change the way people act, but for Milwaukee Brewers star Carlos Gomez, it changed the way he talked to some people.

Last spring, Gomez received a three-year, $24 million extension from the Brewers. That amount of money is enough to change one’s lifestyle.

In order to hold a conversation with people who are also wealthy, Gomez did some research after signing the extension. It was probably a good move, considering he needed to know how to talk to teammate Ryan Braun, who has a nine-figure deal.

As a part of this week’s Sports Illustrated feature on Gomez, Braun shared a funny little detail about his teammate:

Google can be very helpful.

Yu Darvish Loses Bid for Perfect Game in 7th Inning After Misplayed Fly Ball

Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish has come close to throwing a perfect game in the past, and was on the cusp of the feat yet again Friday night against the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, a misplayed fly ball cost him another chance at joining the exclusive club.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Darvish got David Ortiz to lift a lazy fly ball into right field. Second baseman Rougned Odor—playing in only his second game at the big-league level—was under the ball because the Rangers had a shift on, but a miscommunication between him and right fielder Alex Rios allowed the ball to drop into no-man’s land.

On plays like this, where no fielders touch the ball, the official scorer typically credits the batter with a hit. This ended up being the case for Darvish, who was the beneficiary of the hometown scorer.

With the pressure of perfection lifted off his shoulders, Darvish continued his dominance and was within one out of throwing the first no-hitter of his career. But on his 126th and final pitch of the night, Big Papi was able to find a hole in the shift.

Odor had a chance—albeit a slim one—to redeem himself, but wasn’t able to stab the hard ground ball:

Had Darvish completed the no-hitter, this controversial ruling would have been talked about for quite some time.
